As you may already know, I love coming up with new ideas to keep this blog interesting and fun for you. So today I am bringing you an interview with the lady behind the new period undies brand; Vitals. This post is the first in the ‘Ask the Expert’ series. As the name suggests I will be conducting interviews with clever and inspiring women who are experts in their field.
I am so excited to share Sonika’s interview with you and I am grateful that she has taken time to give us a little insight into her life. In this post, we talk about her business Vitals which sells (extremely comfortable) period underwear in New Zealand.
The ‘Ask the Expert’ series is about learning, building awareness and giving you a behind the scenes peek at what some talented women are doing in the field of women’s reproductive and sexual health.
Without further ado – let me introduce the lovely Sonika, the lady behind the new period undies brand; Vitals. She is a 26year old landscape designer and noodle soup lover whose favorite movie is Parasite. She lives in Auckland with her husband (and hopefully a fur baby soon too!).
The face behind Vitals: the beautiful Sonika.
I’m a landscape designer by profession. Vitals is my passion baby where I can put all my creative energy and strong ideals into. We want to surprise women with how comfortable periods can be with just a sustainable swap – period underwear.
Vitals started this February (2020) but we were working on them since May last year.
I felt like I might just die without starting one. I was continually preaching about sustainable alternatives on social media to my few friends – a girl can only do so much but a brand can change lives.
I love my mornings real slow. Me and my partner work from home, so it helps a lot. I start with a strong coffee then I journal my thoughts, and give some love to my favorite plants. I cook some lunch and then start working through until night time.
Planning. It’s a tough thing for me, I always believed to thrive in chaos and uncertainty – but I was wrong.
Being able to scale the good – and getting kind words back from the customers. We drove a donation camp in India where we had few seminars on sexual health and donated reusable period products for girls. A few months later, I got a text from a girl at the back saying they were really useful for her and her sisters. Through Vitals, we are now able to fund recycling projects in climate-vulnerable places in the world. This is an absolute dream come true for me.
Know your body. A woman’s body is a treasure, it bewilders me how we are mentally and physically differently equipped. There needs to be more research done in the field of SRH for women, as an example – birth control pills are not an answer for menstrual health issues. They genuinely ripped my teenage years apart as I was suffering from Polycystic Ovarian Syndrome (PCOS), if only me and my mum knew what my body was actually seeking. I wish there to be more knowledge women can readily access, on that note I love what @womanbekind is doing.
(Greta: I didn’t pay her for this glowing endorsement haha).
Try them on – trust me when I say it, there is nothing more convenient than period underwear on your flow days. We have done enough research to make them leak-proof, comfortable and sustainable. You’ve got to try one to believe what we say, it is quite lifechanging. There is no better win for you AND the planet together.
Hands – It’s magical how ten fingers get to together to create everything we can.
There’s an entire universe in there – I hope to understand it someday!
The future you is very proud of you and every decision you’ve made.
Grateful and Content.
Coming out of a stressful pattern of thinking that I was not enough. I have learned so much about myself and yet to learn a lot. Thanks to mindfulness, I can now identify the self-damaging thoughts right away. It’s been a journey, but I’m in a better place now.
I hope you all enjoyed meeting Sonika, the lady behind the new period undies brand; Vitals. I found her story really inspiring and I hope you do too. Not only because she started something she believed in but because of the journey she has had with her body and self-love. We can all take a little something from her wisdom today.
Thank you so much as always for taking the time to read my blog. I would LOVE to hear your thoughts or what you took away from this today. Leave a comment below – it will make my day. Take care ladies!
